Abstract:

CYBATHLON 2020 – Powered-Exoskeleton Race This project aims to develop a powered lower limb exoskeleton to compete in Cybathlon 2020 in Zurich. The project will require developing novel control algorithms, as well as necessary hardware upgrades to an existing exoskeleton, to assist gait to those who have partially lost the capacity of walking or to those people that need to “learn how to walk again” after suffering neural damage. The main objective of the developed exoskeleton and control paradigm is to enable user to perform standing up/sitting down and manipulating objects when standing. These tasks are particularly challenging since significant joint moments (about hip and knee joints) are required for sitting down and standing up, while crutches are often used to achieve balance when standing up.
