Abstract:

Climate change is leading to global and local variations in the water cycle, impacting meteorological parameters and natural resources. One of the regions most affected by these changes is the Alpine region, which is experiencing marked increase in temperatures, decrease in snowfalls, and a general shortage of water resources. In this context, it is necessary to analyze those virtuous examples of communities that, with accurate monitoring, careful action plans and discussions with all stakeholders, are able to best adapt to these changes, focusing on water resource management. A case study is then identified among the Alpine valleys where multiple water uses and seasonal requirements are known. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the current status of the various drinking, non-drinking, and irrigation water distribution systems, and the land resources that feed these systems, through statistical and graphical analyses. Available water inputs and outputs were correlated with tourist flows and meteorological parameters to provide a comprehensive overview of the area's demand. Based on future climate forecast data, considerations were made regarding possible changes in the quantity and spatial distribution of water resources availability and use. Finally, climate adaptation and resource management strategies already implemented or in the process of being implemented were analyzed to highlight critical issues and propose additional adjustments. The thesis results highlight how careful resource management and management plans agreed upon with all stakeholders can be the solution to respond to ongoing changes in the best possible way, making the study area a benchmark for the entire Alpine region.
