Abstract: |
Kochi, a historic coastal city in Kerala, India, is facing rapid growth due to migration and unplanned development, causing issues like floods, extreme heat, and a polluted environment. This transformation is reducing public spaces and diminishing the sense of community, essential for cultural exchange and social connections. The neglect of the city's canal system, once vital for nature and the economy, has further worsen these problems, hindering the city's ability to recover from disasters and maintain a high quality of life. This research investigates using climate-resilient planning to rejuvenate public spaces in Kochi, with a focus on the canal regions. Through a concept (Social Green Structuration), the study proposes a strategy that combines nature restoration with creating inclusive spaces for everyone, striving to strike a balance between environmental preservation and fostering a vibrant community. The study examines Kochi's tropical monsoon climate, known for heavy rainfall, high humidity, and Urban Heat Island effects that worsen flooding and discomfort. It focuses on canal areas facing issues like ecological degradation, encroachment, and poor infrastructure. The Market Canal and Thevara Perandoor Canal are selected for improvement due to their differing vulnerabilities and community significance. These pilot areas can help develop strategies applicable to other canal zones in the city. Through observations, surveys, and case studies, the research identifies challenges like flooding, pollution, and lack of green spaces and emphasizes the need for inclusive and eco-friendly public areas that enhance social connections and cultural vibrancy. The study suggests learning from successful projects in Seoul, Rotterdam, and Copenhagen to create tailored interventions for Kochi. These would aim to restore green infrastructure, implement sustainable urban planning and develop climate-friendly public facilities to promote walkability, safety, and social interaction. The proposal introduces the concept of Social Green Infrastructure framework with six key strategies: Compact and walkable urban design, Integration of green infrastructure, Climate resilient public place, Community centric and inclusive planning, Social connectivity and cultural vibrancy, Policy and governance for long - term resilience. Strategies such as shaded pathways, urban gardens, inclusive facilities, cultural events, and sustainable materials are suggested to improve the ecological and social aspects of the area. A Design Policy Integration Matrix ensures that interventions align with governance measures like regulations, grant programs, climate-sensitive guidelines, accessibility codes, and community engagement platforms to support sustainable implementation. This thesis proposes a new approach to urban planning that views public spaces as more than just physical places, but as vital social-ecological systems crucial to the city's strength and character. By encouraging cooperation between residents, authorities, and experts, and incorporating climate adaptation into culturally relevant and inclusive frameworks, this research presents a practical method for rethinking at-risk urban areas. The revitalization of Kochi's canals through Social Green Structuration demonstrates how comprehensive planning can address environmental restoration, flood control, and community welfare, resulting in lively, resilient public spaces that support both the environment and society amid increasing climate challenges. |
