Abstract:

Oxidative stress is involved in the onset and progression of many pathological conditions, including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which are the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Recently, it has been reported that a certain Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) dose can offer cytoprotection to cardiac cells under hypoxic conditions. However, the mode of action as well as associated therapies are still missing. In this Master’s thesis project, a novel biodegradable poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymer (btPEO) was investigated to develop a cardioprotective hydrogel patch toward oxidative stress conditions.
