This thesis will explore the attributes of information systems, with a focus on enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, considering their potential as alternatives to conventional business methodologies and structures. A summary assessment of the operational efficiency improvements that such systems offer companies will also be conducted. In particular, the process of replacing business flows within a large automotive company will be analyzed. The first chapter will outline the current state of digital technologies, documenting the undeniable supremacy resulting from their use and delving into their ramifications on the business and socioeconomic environment. In addition, special attention will be paid to the landscape of Italian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
