Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the change in the dynamics of the Aérospatiale AS350 helicopter rotor as a result of the modification performed to the tip and its possible loss during flight. The Silent Eco Wing replaces the tip of the original configuration and modifies the end vortices generated by the helicopter blade reducing both noise and drag generated. This master's thesis work is carried out with Piccitto Lorenzo - university colleague – in collaboration with TPS Aerospace Engineering Srl, a leading company in the aerospace field that deals with – among others – support for the design and certification of aeronautical products and parts. This project is part of a continuous thesis cycle: the data used are derived from previously conducted studies and the results will then be used in the next steps of the analysis. Multiple analyses are conducted so as to bring results that are always – going forward in the reading – more congruent with the actual case in terms of imbalance and changes in the aerodynamic load developed: •??Study of the flapping dynamics of the helicopter blade with the simplified model in which the rotor allows only the degree of freedom of flapping for the blade, which behaves like a rigid beam hinged in the center of the hub; •??Calculation of the correct values of the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of helicopter blades when centrifugal forces are present through Myklestad’s method; •??Simulation of the AgustaWestland AW109 articulated rotor behaviour by creating a code that studies its dynamic; •??Examination of the effect of the loss of the SEW of a rotating blade of AS350 rotor comparison with acceptable data. In particular, this thesis work is focused on wave form analysis for AS350 blade and on validation of dynamic model for AW109 rotor.
