Abstract: |
Cities occupy about 3% of Earth’s surface and are responsible for over 70% of global greenhouse gasses emission and use 3/4 of global energy. They say that by 2050 almost 85% of the European population is going to live in the cities. That is why to implement the prevention of climate change, the participation of the cities is mandatory. We can not avoid climate change disasters anymore but can slow down the process to minimize its consequences. Furthermore the recent events in the last three years brought into light other challenges that cities must face. Covid-19 pandemic has impacted our lives and the city’s priority development plans significantly. The spread of the virus caused many sudden changes in the city’s dynamics. Cities had to shut down all public facilities due to the global quarantine. The Covid-19 pandemic shaped the visions of future cities and clarified their principal needs. This study aims to examine how Climate change and Covid-19 can affect and change the thinking of cities and how these measures can be implemented to reuse already existing industrial sites, focusing mainly on the two cities of Łódź, Poland and Turin, Italy. Most of the post-industrial sites and buildings have been abandoned and after deindustrialization some of them were restored and reused while others were still left as brownfields. These areas are large sites located within urban environments which makes them considered as potential for future developments. They are mostly intra-urban areas that are easily reachable by any means of transport. |
