Abstract:

The present work has been entirely carried out at “MICLA Engineering & Design”, an engineering consulting company working in the automotive, aerospace, railway and boats field. The scope of this work is to show the method and results of the body in white design of the EVO 37, which is a Restomod built by “Kimera Automobili”, based on the famous 1983 Lancia 037, which was the last rear wheel drive car to win the group B world rally championship. The aim of the design and analysis of the EVO 37 body in white is to guarantee a target torsional and bending stiffness, to ensure good performances in terms of safety, comfort and handling. The body in white of the car is composed by a tubular frame and a carbon fiber body. This work also investigates the performance improvements due to the introduction of carbon fiber components and how to model this composite material for a FEM analysis, showing the importance of this material in the automotive field. The FEM analysis has been done using HyperMesh as pre-processor, OptiStruct as solver and HyperView as post-processor.
