Abstract:

Passing a junction by vehicles was a controversial issue from many years ago, to address, traffic lights practiced, however, their intrinsic functionality sometimes leads to unnecessary waiting time for vehicles which consequently leads to more fuel consumption and thus air pollution. This thesis concentrated on the development of a distributed virtual traffic light protocol for vehicular networks to reduce the waiting time of vehicles at the intersection and decrease the number of stops and goes and as a result, lessen fuel consumption. To this purpose, a Veins project created using OMNeT++ and SUMO simulators to implement the scenario. Finally, a set of algorithms proposed to minimize the time to clear the intersection and the number of stops and goes.
