Abstract:

Many industries, such as automotive, aerospace and healthcare, rely on material and mechanical testing to ensure the quality and safety of their products. However, in these applications the measurement of the force does not take into account the time and frequency influences and the traceability path is missing. For these reasons in September 2019 an International project has been started in Germany with the purpose of developing methods and transfer standards for static, continuous and dynamic force calibration traceable to the SI units. The thesis work here presented is intended to be a contribution to the development of such a project. Researches and studies are here done in order to provide solid alternatives to calibration processes for quasi-static and dynamic load since standards are at present not available. Firstly a list of preliminary concepts is presented, secondly the working principle of strain gauge transducers is illustrated so that, with the baggage of resulting information, we can proceed into the core of this thesis work; in fact force transducers calibration in the three load conditions, namely static, quasi-static and dynamic are discussed in the subsequent chapters. While experimental static calibration measurements have been performed and reported entirely, for continuous and dynamic calibrations, despite having selected and prepared the proper equipment and measurement setup, significant limitations due to COVID-19 crisis occurred, so that only the experimental plans together with the methodology for uncertainty assessment have been reported.
