SAFETY AWARENESS IN THE SCHOOL STUDENTS DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

Occupational and domestic accidents still represent a serious problem affecting all economies despite technological legislative actions made in the last 30 years. Even schools are involved in this problem. Unsafe behavior and risky actions and lack in safety education can lead to accidents involving students. The thesis recorded the results of a survey done to investigate the student safety awareness level. This thesis presents the data on the safety knowledge and the survey addressed a sample of Turin students, which were tested through the participation to a simple game. There were 986 students from 7 years old to 15 years old who were involved in the game. There are five schools involved in the survey including primary schools and secondary schools. There were 147 questions in total and the questions were divided into two part: “Primary” questions (primary school students) and “Secondary” questions (secondary school students). The data which were collected from five schools at different places of Turin are arranged in the tables, providing meaningful indications on the safety knowledge levels of the schools. In the tables three important information must be recorded: basic general information (like gender and age); question ID proposed and obtained answers (right or wrong). In the “Primary” questions, there are five topics: Domestic risk; Free sports, game; Emergency; Life in schools and behavior and Street (behavior and signals). In the “Secondary” questions, there are seven topics: Domestic risk; Free sports, game; Emergency and basic knowledge of risk; Life in schools and behavior; Street (behavior and signals); Technological risk and Chemical (substances, fire and explosion). The primary schools’ mean value of correct answer percentage in the primary schools is 62.6%. In the same way in the secondary schools the mean value of the correct answer percentage in the secondary schools is 51.1%. The correct answer percentage is higher in the primary schools than in the secondary schools because the “Primary” questions for the primary school students are simpler than “Secondary” questions for the secondary school students. Then the elements how affect the correct answer percentage is analyzed including gender, age, school location and topics. For gender, the female participants have higher correct answer percentage, For the age, the older students have more safety knowledge. For the school location, the suburban schools' correct answer percentage is higher than the city-center schools. Finally, Student safety education should be implemented according to the learning situation of students. To improve the students’ safety awareness, some suggestions should be carried out. For example, Strengthen the construction of teachers to meet the requirements of school safety education. The schools should hold lectures on safety education for teachers or organize safety training activities to communicate, learn and strengthen the theoretical safety teaching, the schools should start projects like competitions about safety knowledge every four months and parents and family members can collaborate to supervise students’ behaviour through the appointment.
