Abstract:

This thesis analyzes Chinese danwei through socio-spatial characteristics and their roles as urban development strategies. These interventions can facilitate the interaction of groups of different ages, cultures and gender. Nowadays many Beijing’s danwei have been transformed into other facilities, some of them are transformed into art districts, but successful flagship projects are scarce, while others are left to their selves conditions, making them huge barriers inside city center. Through the research on work units both in Beijing and in Mainland China, past and present, it will attempt to clearly identify the correlation of danwei compounds and well established communities backgrounds.

The research explores several issues surrounding danwei not just limited to urban design and architecture, but also encompasses research on their origins through history of Chinese cities, the sociality inside this spaces, the meaning for its citizens in through time, and how they attempt to evolve and survive in the present society.

A comparative analysis on the features of these spaces to determine a basic criteria for design and the interpretation of the research will result in the choice and the renewal design proposal of a danwei compound, located in the city center, the Beijing Second Thermal Power Plant.
