Abstract:

The urgent need to limit the continuous reliance on fossil fuels, which still play a key role in the global share of total energy supply, has boosted the request and the research for clean and renewable energy sources. Sustainable alternatives are needed because carbon-based fuels, when burnt, release to the atmosphere a great amount of CO2, which represents the major cause of air pollution and greenhouse gas effect, ultimately resulting in severe environmental events. Utilisation of the Sun’s radiation as source of energy can effectively limit these risks. However, to be a primary energy supply, solar energy must be captured, converted, and stored to overcome its intrinsic intermittency. One of the most attractive ways to convert and store solar energy is in the form of chemical bonds, by production of solar fuels. By means of Artificial Photosynthesis (AP), sunlight energy can be captured and stored in chemical bonds, via direct CO2 photoreduction and consequent generation of a solar fuel. Solar fuels represent a sustainable option for long-term energy storage systems, as they may allow to reach high energy densities. The project SoFiA, acronymous for Soap Film Based Artificial Photosynthesis, funded in 2020 by the European Commission, aims to initiate and consolidate a baseline of feasibility for soap film-based AP technology which would lead to a relatively inexpensive solar fuel production. In this context, the present work of thesis aims at studying the dynamics of soap films, in order to provide an analysis of the soap film development throughout its whole lifetime, from generation to rupture, highlighting the various processes that may take place in between. The work relies on a combination of both theoretical evaluation and experimental results.
