Abstract:

Accelerated urbanisation is highly impacting our world in economic, social and environmental dimensions which therefore necessitates reexamination of the ways in which cities are provisioned with food and water as well as other essential goods and services; By 2050, the world will need to double its urban capacity which leads to increasing the needs of the people and creating challenges for food production and security, the climate change is posing additional challenges too, affecting cities and their surrounding areas. On another hand, the urban tissue of the city is slowly changing along with the physiological changement in the needs of the society. Many industrial areas in the city who once in a time had a purpose, after the post-fordist transition became abandoned with no planning, leaving behind bronwfields waiting to be regenerated. When the Ex-Innocenti first appeared to my sight I couldn't but contemplate this magnificient structure and wonder what story it holds behind. When I entered the building, I saw random wild vegetation and obvious degradation in the structure but much more than that, I saw a potential of a regeneration capable of stimulating the development of this district on so many levels, and redefine its role that was forgotten for a long time in the urban context. The placement of this area in the peri-urban and connection with the landscape which might have seemed as an obstacle for some requalification projects, I used it as a strong point for this project. To better understand the urban tissue of this area and start a requalification program, I first analysed the maps of Milan with different layers and studied the projects adopted by the municipality and the experience of the Parco Sud, The leading question throughout my study was: How can we redefine the role of these areas in the urban context, requalificate them according to the needs by creating an economic and social development and tackling new innovative ways for agriculture inside the city. In few words, this project is about requalificating the dismissed industrial areas in the purpose of answering to the food production crisis, it is an approach which studies the relation between requalification, city and agriculture.
