Abstract:

Data engineering for motorcycles is a wide argument, with many different possible interpretation. The aim of this work is the development of a precise methodolgy for analyzing data and extracting concrete results, able to give useful information, through a software produced on MATLAB. This thesis has been worked out in collaboration with Pirelli motorcycle testing department. In particular the focus was on two main areas. First one is road tires testing, in which a complete analysis of vibration transmitted to the bike was developed. Second one is racing tires testing. This is the aspect on which most of the work has concentrated, being racing motorcycles more complete in terms of sensors mounted on and requiring particular attention for set up operations, both mechanically and electronically. For this reason an entire part of the software is dedicated to find the correct set up, starting from chassis geometry configuration, passing through suspensions and ending to engine and dynamic controls mapping. Then a section is dedicated to performance evaluation, with automatic generation of reports. In this section an accurate data analysis procedure has been developed, with extraction of numbers, graphs and Key Performance Indicators. These have been introduced after a process of optimization and validation on real data. After the explanation of the procedure, in the last part ,the results of real track sessions are shown, evidencing the different results requirement for front and rear tire testing.
