Fan Response to Aerodymanic Distortion.

Rel. Lorenzo Casalino. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Aerospaziale, 2019

Abstract:

The main aim of this project is to investigate effects triggered by inlet aerodynamic distortion on engine operability and performances. In particular it will be considered a total pressure distortion due to cross wind. The physics of this phenomenon was shaped thanks to the design of a mathematical model, describing it from the geometrical and thermodynamics point of view. In order to demonstrate the achievement of the stated item, this project will deal with the generation of theoretical distortion maps at the inlet of a low pressure architecture fan, exploited to estimate one-dimensional total pressure gradients. The latter will be used as inlet condition to run numerical simulations. The post-processed outputs will furnish distortion impact on the degradation of stability margin and efficiency penalty as well as a base for the development of a new method to average total pressure gradients and estimate the surge margin avoiding simulations.
