Abstract:

The Venezuelan capital serves the most prestigious universities of the country with the highest amount of students enrolled, many coming from other regions even without the availability of dorms in the city. The lack of student housing in Caracas has been an unattended problem that is affecting negatively the life of the undergraduates and their decisions when enrolling in a university. The aim is to propose a model of student housing for the city keeping a high quality architectonic value by the use of recycled shipping containers. Using the Central University of Venezuela with the highest amount of enrolled (around 62.513 students) as a target to settle the buildings in its surroundings, not intending to cover the whole demand (around 7.000 students) due to spatial reasons, the project approach is to study the impact this residence have on the students life, proposing, at the same time, a cost effective building.

The project involved the analysis of different topics as, Co-Living concept towards the social interaction on its spaces, cost effective for optimising the use of resources and the modular construction system using shipping container as the module.

The results showed that the residence should be conceived by cells, having each one the possibility to be independent but connected at the same time through each others. According to the structure, even if the containers have certain structural capacity to support each others, when assembling them in the project, a metallic frame will be needed for space diversity and durability of the building. The project shows an increase of architectonic qualities comparing it with other projects of low budget due to the optimal use of sources after the research, even if the containers meant to be a limitation factor for their rigid structure. This project could be use as the starting point to build a plan of a students residence network along the city and possibly the country attending the high demand each university has.
