INTRODUCTION

The Chinese history is long, great and deep, and has extensive and profound material and intangible cultural heritage. While the carrier of these historical information is just residing in the museum. In a sense, we can learn about the past and present of a place through the museum. The museum not only bears the historical and cultural heritage of the city, but also represents the avant-garde architecture concept and the most advanced technological level to some extent. A museum is a brilliant civilization, people can communicate with the history through appreciating cultural relics and overlook the ups and downs of history through the temporal obstruct. Museum in China has been developing for more than 100 years, and the History Museum is the most important part of the Chinese museum.

So I chose the History Museum as emphasis and detailed analysis its spatial distribution, thus summarizing the functions and features of History Museum to improve the function of History Museum so as to better serve the public.

The first part of this thesis starts from the evolution of Chinese museums, which introduces the origin of Chinese museums, the development of modern museums and the general situation of contemporary museums. Meanwhile, it combines with the influence of western countries and shows from the emerging phase of Chinese museums thousands years ago to the development of contemporary museums after thousands years in different aspects. The second part of this thesis also further describes the various types of Chinese museums: History Museum, Art Museum, Science and Technology Museum, Memorial Museum, Archaeology Museum, Specialized Museum, Folk Custom Museum, Comprehensive Museum, and gives examples respectively. The third part of this thesis focuses on the History Museum which 1 considered the most significative due to the History Museums in China have the largest number and become more perfect after one hundred years development.

And I selects three provincial and municipal museums in my hometown Henan province to describe emphatically. They respectively are Henan Museum, Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum and Luoyang Museum. The text is analyzed in detail the development of each museum, which both Henan Museum and Luoyang Museum experienced relocation and reconstruction to a certain extent while Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum undergone expansion and improvement on the original site. Then as for the architectural appearance, Henan Museum and Luoyang Museum are modem architecture style while Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum is antique architectural style. As well as the spatial and function distribution, all the three museums are planning the exhibition halls based on time line and exhibition content, so that the audience can make a more reasonable visit.
