Abstract:

Genetic optimization of 2D and 3D air-hydro-foil profiles for a race boat This master’s thesis presents the development of an innovative optimisation tool for hydrofoils. The tool expands upon existing solvers, which focus on 2D problems, by optimising 3D hydrofoils and addressing multi-objective problems. Main solutions have been sought for both hydrodynamic and structural problems using multi-objective genetic algorithms. The optimisation process combines panel method solvers for aerodynamic and hydrodynamic analysis and a beam model-based software for structural analysis, converging to the analytical definition of the objective function. The tool is coded in Matlab, which allows for the use of embedded genetic algorithm routines and an adaptable environment for future improvements. The tool has been tested on a specific test case searching for a low-deflection, high-efficient hydrofoil using an unconventional efficiency × speed fitness function modulated by the wing incidence. Results showed good similarities with existing boats and the parameter trends followed what was expected from the experience. The work was carried out in collaboration with the MORE Lab, which provided ex- tensive experience in using genetic algorithms to solve engineering problems. This optimisation tool provides a comprehensive solution to a complex problem and offers a wide range of customisation options. Further development of this work is underway, including the introduction of aero-structural stability analysis and a more detailed structural hydrofoil definition.
