Abstract:

This study aims to show the effects of different building envelope retrofitting strategies due to increasing energy demand and energy consumption in the residential buildings. To show purpose of this study, the energy estimations were done by using TABULA Webtool and QGIS Software. With the excessive energy consumption in the worldwide, governments and many institutions conduct many research and investigate new building envelope retrofitting strategies to create more sustainable and energy-efficient livable areas. Especially European Commission has established many legislative frameworks related to not just only for energy efficiency and energy saving in the buildings but also reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions due to increasing CO2 emissions because of fossil energy sources. The northern region of Turin, the Regio Parco district, which is close to the Po river, is the subject of the article’s investigation into the city’s urban morphological fabrics. The plot area which focused in the study is on Corso Taranto and it is between Via Corelli, Via Pergolosi and Via Mercadante streets. To better understanding the energy estimation results and the urban area, some literature researches were done. The research is starting with the definition of energy consumption and energy demands in the world and the chapter was supported by Turin analysis. In the first chapter, understanding the energy profile of Turin and its energy problems are aimed. Another aim of the literature study is to explain the energy efficiency strategies in the building and neighborhood scale in climate mitigation perspective. This part of the study discusses the general problem in both scales and which type of strategies are used. During the study, it is clearly understood that not only the buildings and neighborhood typologies but also the features of the environmental factors play a critical role. In this case, sustainability and renewable energy sources are becoming one of the most critical points. In the last part of the literature research, the energy-saving technologies which are developed to build or retrofit to achieve energy-efficient residential buildings are explained. But during this chapter, building envelope retrofitting developments are stayed essential due to the connection of the energy estimations done in TABULA. In the project of energy estimation, one type of building from the plot area was chosen and energy estimations were done. To understand energy efficiency and energy consumption in a building after applying different retrofitting technologies, three scenarios which compose of without retrofitting, light retrofitting and heavy retrofitting were designed. In the end, all the results were compared, and the importance of retrofitting technologies was proved in the study. Keywords: sustainable design, energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy demand, energy consumption, building envelope technologies, retrofitting strategies
