Abstract: |
This thesis deals with implementing into the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software SU2 a pipeline for performing numerical investigations of flow control via uniform blowing and suction on transonic wing profiles. The final goal is to validate the pipeline and perform Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulations of flow control on wing profiles, in order to assess the effect of the control on lift and the various sources of drag on wings. The validation of the code consists in running a simulation of the same case through three different softwares (SU2, OpenFOAM and xFoil) and comparing their results in terms of aerodynamic coefficients (lift and drag) and of polar diagrams force coefficients, covering a vast parameter space. Variations in terms of turbulence parameters and angle of attack of the airfoil are done in order to show results in polar of Cl - Cd and Cl - α. The investigation of the active flow control consists in cutting a part of the surface of the airfoil and changing the boundary conditions for that part. After these case changes, simulations are run in SU2 and this time, variations include also the different positions of the blowing boundary condition along the airfoil. The results of these simulations are useful for analyzing the behaviour of aerodynamic properties of the airfoil in case of an active control of the turbulent flow, which is the aim of this thesis. |
