Abstract:

The thesis has been developed in the FCA Safety Centre in Orbassano (TO). In this document a new test of Euro NCAP is presented. The test is the Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier one, in which a new progressive deformable barrier is utilized. The reason why a new barrier will be used is explained in the document. The reason why this test will be introduced in the rating of the new cars from the year 2020 is the compatibility between vehicles in case of impact. The topic of compatibility is treated in the document. Some projects have been developed during the years about the compatibility. They will be explained in this document. They started in the 1996 with the EEVC WG 15, continued with the VC-COMPAT and finished in the 2012 with the FIMCAR project. These projects were financed by the European Committee in order to find a test for the evaluation of the compatibility in each vehicle. The scope has been reached with the last project. The practical purpose of this thesis is to develop a numerical-experimental procedure in order to evaluate the deformation pattern of the new honeycomb progressive barrier. The procedure will be useful in order to give a score of the test. The procedure should be implemented by using the available tools. The tools already available in the Safety Centre office are a 3D scanner ATOS Core 500 and the relative software ATOS Professional 2016, produced by GOM (Gesellschaft fűr Optische Messtechnik mbH). Two procedures have been implemented, one in the cases in which the test is made in the FCA laboratory and so all test can be followed from the start to the end. Another procedure has been implemented in order to evaluate the barriers that come from an external laboratory. In this case only the post test barrier is available. The difference between the two procedure is in the position of the barrier during the scansion. The software part, and so the evaluation of the deformation, is identical. The procedure have been tested on different barrier and both procedures have been utilized. Furthermore, a comparison between the results obtained in the FCA laboratory and results coming from an external laboratory have been made.
