Abstract:

2D Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are a class of 2D compound semiconductors with general formula of the kind MX2, where M is the transition metal species and X represents the chalcogen atom. For such materials the interaction occurs through van der Waals forces (vdW) leading to the possibility of stacking different compounds even with large lattice mismatch. Intensive studies have been performed on this novel materials in order to examine all their properties leading to a wide interest in today electronic and optoelectronic research fields. Nonetheless, 2D TMDCs can play an important role for optical applications thanks to their remarkable optoelectronic properties among which exciton based devices for photonic circuits emerge. The exciton is an uncharged quasi-particle formed by an electron-hole pair bounded by Coulomb interaction and these can be manipulated as information carriers for signal and information purposes. The aim of this project has been exploiting these 2D materials for building up an excitonic device to evaluate its properties (optical and electrical ones), addressing the behaviour of the hybrid excitons (hIXs).
