Abstract:

The quality of water in urban spaces is a reflection of the negotiating power of its inhabitants, especially in informal settlements, not yet legally recognized, where the most marginalized subjects have limited access to water and are faced with supply problems in a polluted environment. Non-human actors, who are an integral part of all urban ecosystems and who suffer the impacts of urbanization, also deserve recognition and protection of their rights and agency. All these inhabitants have the potential to take collective action to challenge the dominant paradigms of urban governance and create more equitable and sustainable urban environments that respect the needs of all forms of life. The aim of this work is to start a debate around the subject of the right to water within the Kaludjerica neighborhood, an informal suburb of Belgrade, which can lead to the remediation of the polluted stream that crosses the settlement.
