Abstract:

Bolted joints flange play an important role in the industries, specifically oil and gas sector. Considering environmental pollution, the new methods require to avoid leakage. Hydrogen is a new fuel in transportation and industries, then the old methods cannot guarantee the minimum leakage required by upgraded rules. Previous works mainly focused on ASME and Taylor Forged method. In the Taylor forged method the properties of gasket have not been upgraded and the leakage class is not involved. Gasket behavior is complicated due to nonlinear material properties linked with permanent deformation. The current work concentrated on EN standard methods in which the tightness level is the base of calculation, and the elastic behavior of gasket is modeled precisely. In this investigation, a comparison between the EN 13445-3 Annex G and EN 1591-1 (for designing bolted flanges) has been done to assess the behavior of the joint. Three types of common gasket: Spiral-wounded, Kamprofile and metal Jacketed, have been investigated. In addition, 6 size of flanges have been considered. Both Analytical Design (AD) and Finite Element Design (FED) have been researched to verify the behavior of the joint.
