Abstract
ABSTRACT
The content of the present thesis deal with the topic of interest and outcomes of the Graduation Studio 'Rome Collage City'. In this preliminary work, the students conduct their first analysis, gaining a broader understanding of the city and detecting potentials for a possible transformation.
The focus of this dissertation is on the Borgate fasciste. The 12 official borgate were built between 1928 and 1940 for displaced people either by choice or compulsion. The first generation of inhabitants were the residents of the historical center displaced as a consequence of the demolitions established in the 1931 Master Plan, as well as those who became homeless because of rent increases of the city center.
The process of the thesis starts with the analysis of the most important events that influenced the urban development of the Borgate. Firstly, the Fascist architecture is analyzed throughout the duality between modernism and classicism, between internationalism and 'Italian-ess'. Secondly, a deeper study of the urban context in which these neighborhoods were born is conducted; by making a procedural reconstruction of the development of the roman periphery. One step further, in order to face a project of regeneration, I study some strategies, different approaches and tools for the transformation of the public city. This work is completed with a project for the urban regeneration of Primavalle (one of the official borgate).
