Abstract:

Spesso si tende ad attribuire scarso valore alle risorse che la natura ci offre, dando per scontato che l’aria, l’acqua e altri beni siano abbondanti e gratuiti. In realtà, il sistema naturale fornisce importanti servizi detti servizi ecosistemici che soddisfano, direttamente o indirettamente, le necessità della specie umana e garantiscono la vita di tutte le altre specie. Si tratta di tutti quei benefici, che la popolazione ottiene dall’ambiente, come l’approvvigionamento di alimenti, legname, biocombustibili o come la regolazione del clima, la decomposizione dei prodotti di scarto, l’impollinazione dei raccolti, la fotosintesi, fino ai benefici culturali, ricreativi e spirituali che la natura ci fornisce.

Parlare di servizi ecosistemici anziché del funzionamento della natura offre un interessante e differente approccio per comunicare e sensibilizzare la popolazione sui legami tra gli ecosistemi e il benessere umano (MEA, 2005). Anche se il termine "servizi ecosistemici" è stato primariamente introdotto da Ehrlich e Ehrlich (1981), l'origine del concetto nella storia moderna risale alla fine degli anni ‘60, in cui veniva evidenziato il valore sociale sulle funzioni della natura (King, 1966; Helliwell, 1969; Ehrlich e Ehrlich, 1970; Dee et al, 1973;. Ehrlich et al, 1977;. Bormann e Likens, 1979).

Negli anni ‘70 e ‘80, veniva già sottolineata la dipendenza sociale ed economica dalle risorse naturali con l’obiettivo di attirare l'interesse del pubblico sulla necessità di conservare e tutelare la biodiversità (ad es Westman, 1977; de Groot, 1987).

Alcune tappe importanti nel processo e nello sviluppo delle tematiche sui servizi ecosistemici, che hanno permesso l’affermarsi dei temi anche a livello internazionale sono state: il libro di Daily “Nature’s Services: Societal Dependence Ori Naturai Ecosystems" (Daily, 1997) e la Carta di Costanza et al. (1997) sul valore del capitale naturale globale.

In particolare il lavoro di Costanza sulla necessità di quantificare economicamente con le prime ipotesi numeriche ha determinato un forte impatto sulla scienza e sulle decisioni politiche. Soprattutto dopo la pubblicazione del Millenium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA, 2005), commissionato dall’UNEP, sui benefici alle persone che derivano direttamente o indirettamente dagli ecosistemi, la letteratura in materia di servizi ecosistemici è aumentata esponenzialmente (Fisher et al., 2009). Da allora, diversi autori e progetti hanno avuto a che fare con la classificazione, quantificazione, mappatura e valutazione dei servizi ecosistemici al fine di integrarli nei processi decisionali.(Costanza et al., 1997; Wilson and Carpenter, 1999; Heal, 2000; de Groot et al., 2002; Turner et al., 2003; MEA, 2005; de Groot, 2006; Fisher et al., 2009; de Groot et al., 2010; Rounsevell et al., 2010).

I territori sono considerati multifunzionali e sono soggetti ad una vasta gamma di usi del suolo, il concetto di funzioni o servizi territoriali, utilizzati come sinonimi ai servizi ecosistemici, ha sollevato molta attenzione nel campo dell'ecologia e pianificazione del paesaggio. La nozione centrale nello sviluppo del territorio è sempre stata che le persone sono parte del territorio e che i territori sono cambiati e si sono adattati in base alle esigenze umane (Linehan e Gross, 1998; Antrop, 2001). Infatti, è importante che le scienze territoriali si concentrino sulla distribuzione spaziale, esse devonottività um da cui sono stati ricavati i seo sia la valutazione della funzionala pianificazion'idea (Bastia delle foreste e degli spazi verdi (Konkolyataticarrto il concetto di funzioni territoriali. Bastier la per supportare la gestione dell'uso sostenii studi chtazione,a tedesca (Haber, 1979; Niemann,er, 19e Volk, 2003; Palmer, 2004; Meyer e Grabaum, interesse per questo tema di ricerca rimangono ancoratate per integrare pienamente il concetto di servizi ecosistemici nella pianificazione del territorio e nei processi decisionaltura sono ancora molte le questioni aperte e doione (de Groot et al., 2010). Tale quadro dovrebbe essere comprensibile, fattibile e in grado di essere applicato a un'ampia gamma di scale e a diversi ecosistemi o paesaggi (Hein et al., 2006).

La proliferazione di pubblicazioni sui servizi ecosistemici generano differenti approcci e modalità per la loro implementazione. Il presente lavoro propone una iniziale sistematizzazione per poter procedere con un confronto costruttivo.
