Abstract:

To comprehend the warscapes on the borders is to grasp the profound human experience that plays out at the intersection of nations, ideologies, and destinies. It has come to my attention that South Lebanon and its borderland population have been constantly marginalized, as if Lebanon was split into two separate nations. A borderland praised for its bucolic landscape is in a vicious cycle of war at the border, turning it into a battlefield. Frontline villages where indiscriminate bombings and armed invasion become a part of the everyday environment. This thesis embarks on a comprehensive exploration of warscapes at the border, a complex and dynamic domain where geopolitical boundaries intersect with narratives of conflict, resilience, and identity. Focusing on diverse extremes of hostile borders in conflict around the world, this thesis highlights the divergences and commonalities that define borders in conflict through diverse contexts. This thesis focuses on the question: How does the naturalized warscape, as well as the economic crisis impact the borderland communities and their normality and everyday life? The aim is to lay groundwork for research into how the warscape present in a hard border generates hardships in the everyday life of border communities whether social, economic, or physical encompassing aspects such as displacement, resilience, and the negotiation of cultural and national identities. In a world where borders are increasingly scrutinized, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the profound and multifaceted consequences of conflicts at the border. Considering the localized findings as well as diverse cases around the world, this thesis strives to create recovery narratives and adaptation strategies that enable the borderland community to resume the war-disputed lives during ongoing times of conflict.
