Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine the integration of sustainable business practices into project management, addressing key questions about the need for and impact of sustainability on traditional project management strategies. Based on fundamental principles, such as the Iron Triangle and the concept of Sustainability, including the Triple Bottom Line perspective, the research explores how these elements can be adapted to incorporate sustainability into project management practices, a topic known as Sustainable Project Management (SPM). Through a comprehensive literature review, the study examines the integration of project manager competencies necessary to achieving sustainability objectives and the idea of projects as instruments for change. Macro issues such as stakeholder management, life cycle management and decision-making processes are analyzed to explain their relevance to Sustainable Project Management. In addition, various frameworks and models from the literature are evaluated for their benefits and limitations, with a focus on the key role of the project manager as a change agent in driving sustainable initiatives. The study concludes with a detailed analysis and illustration of a case study derived from an internal initiative within the Organization where I conducted my internship, which provides insights into the practical application of sustainability within project management. The case study illustrates the methodology used to develop a maturity model, which assesses a project's readiness to implement sustainability interventions in management practices.
