Abstract:

Ammonia stands as a highly efficient energy vector with an established and flexible infrastructure, an easily mastered storage (either compressed or refrigerated) and transportation, having what it takes to mitigate hydrogen's key drawbacks. Interest in ammonia increase as it can be not only used as energy transfer medium and be 'cracked' back to hydrogen, but as fuel itself in internal combustion engine, turbines and electrochemical devices. Its production happens in the Haber-Bosch process where hydrogen is mixed with nitrogen and together. This process is currently based on the use of fossil fuels. The aim of this project is to design an ammonia stand alone system powered by a DOT wind turbine with hydraulic transmission. The existing concept of an offshore hydraulic drivetrain coupled with a Pelton turbine and seawater reverse osmosis will be extended with an electrolyser for hydrogen production from desalinated water and a Haber-Bosch reactor for ammonia production.
