Abstract:

In recent years, the rapid integration of technology into daily life has raised concerns about its impact on our wellbeing. As a result, the concept of digital wellbeing has emerged, aiming to achieve a balance between digital device use and overuse. Several Digital Self-Control Tools (DSCTs) have been developed to tackle these challenges but they often fail to produce long-term results, as they rely solely on self-monitoring and lack effective habit-forming strategies. The primary objective of this thesis is to design a platform, later named HabitHero, which facilitates digital wellbeing education among teenagers. The final application has been implemented based on feedback gathered from preliminary interviews with high school teachers and students. HabitHero’s design is centred around gamification, employing game elements like challenges in a non-game context. The platform is intended to be used under the guidance of educators, providing tools for leading the learning process while allowing students to explore and understand concepts independently. Finally, a preliminary usability test was conducted to assess the efficiency and usability of the system.
