Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the application of Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) in preserving and managing the Torino Esposizioni building. The study explores the utilization of HBIM in different levels of detail (LOD) and across different points in time to enhance the understanding, documentation, and conservation of this significant architectural heritage. The thesis begins with an introduction to the concept of HBIM and its relevance in the field of heritage conservation. It highlights the benefits of using HBIM for capturing and managing the complex and rich information associated with historic buildings. The methodology section outlines the data collection techniques, including laser scanning and photogrammetry, employed to capture accurate representations of the building. The research presents four distinct models of the Torino Esposizioni building, each representing a specific period in its history. The models are created using various LODs, ranging from basic geometric representations to highly detailed digital reconstructions. This approach comprehensively analyzes the building's evolution, structural changes, and architectural features over time. The findings of the study reveal the significance of utilizing different LODs in HBIM for heritage conservation purposes. The models enable a detailed examination of the building's elements, including its facade, roof, interior spaces, and structural components. They also facilitate the identification of potential conservation issues and aid in decision-making for appropriate restoration and maintenance strategies. In conclusion, this research demonstrates the value of HBIM in documenting, analyzing, and preserving historic buildings. The case study of Torino Esposizioni exemplifies the potential of HBIM in capturing the architectural significance and cultural heritage of such structures. The findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge in the field of HBIM and provide practical insights for future applications in heritage conservation efforts.
