Abstract:

In order to achieve Net-Zero global emissions by 2050, which is the core of the road plan for keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius over preindustrial levels, the automotive sector is crucial. To tackle this challenge, many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have established high decarbonization goals. Emissions from vehicle materials will rise both totally and proportionally as tailpipe emissions decline, eventually making up a larger portion of life-cycle emissions. On the road to the carbon-free car, this jump offers both a challenge and a chance. It is essential to create measures to deal with these material emissions now because achieving large-scale decarbonization will take time. Participants in the industry must accept and scale the usage of new technologies and the processes that go along with them while managing shifting material flows as part of this process. The specific path forward is difficult because a coordination issue is at its core, despite the decarbonization of materials in the automotive value chain's promise for the environment and the economy. The approaches we outline for reducing carbon emissions necessitate the efforts of numerous value chain participants. In practice, Automakers have little direct control over the majority of material emissions. However, many of the necessary technologies are still being developed at scale and would require significant upfront investments, and the flow of materials is complicated and challenging to monitor. The objective of this discussion is to develop a model for achieving Carbon Net Zero in light vehicles considering its limitations. The risk is to face problems (lacking of adequate charging infrastructure, high CO2 emissions from the electricity sector) without having any consistent solution. The purpose of this work is to explore and describe the solutions that Stellantis will implement to achieve carbon net zero by 2038 for all its cars. All key factors involved in the analysis will be analyzed, not only the complete electrification of vehicles, but also the most influential vehicle chassis components and the most sustainable commercial product offering. In the last chapter, the results of CO2 emissions between different powertrains of the FIAT 500 are presented to have a concrete example of what is the difference in emissions between an Internal Combustion Engine, Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle and Battery Electric Vehicle.
