Abstract:

This thesis analyzes possible procedures and tests for the study of ion-exchange polymer membrane electrolyzers with particular focus on the heart of the system identified precisely in the alkaline membrane. The study and characterization of this is crucial for predicting and improving electrolyzer performance. A proper analysis procedure makes it possible to identify the best membrane in terms of capacity and operating conditions. Through this thesis work, a standard procedure for electrochemical characterization of the single membrane is defined, which can provide reproducible results and methodologies and appropriate data comparison. The experimental results allowed the definition of electrochemical tests and procedures that involve greater accuracy and reproducibility than the antecedent physical characterizations. The definition of such methodologies allowed us to describe the performance and peculiarities of three different types of alkaline electrolysis membranes useful for the prediction of their behavior within the electrolyzer.
