Study of the waste management situation in the Grand Lyon.

Abstract:

The first goal of this research work is to have a clear understanding of the waste management situation in the Lyon area, and a global – holistic - vision of the situation. My experiences have led me to realize that waste management was a major problem in our society, and that the current situation was far from being sustainable. My experience is that of a recently graduated engineer, attending the Master of Science in Systemic Design, who has been working in the waste management industry for over two years, and who is a citizen of Lyon and of the world. My research work will help me identify problems in the current waste management situation in Grand Lyon. From these problems, challenges and opportunities will emerge thanks to the systemic approach. I have the objective to list these opportunities and identify the key factors, the stakeholders, and the relationships between each of them. In some extents, I want to make a holistic diagnosis of the waste management industry and of the territory of Lyon, the recently created metropole Grand Lyon. Although I will focus on a specific territory, I do not want to restrict my analysis with closed boundaries, so that I will be able to have a global vision of the situation. The second goal of this research is to use this research and holistic diagnosis to propose systemic solutions and alternatives to improve waste management in the studied territory. I want to propose areas of sustainable improvement, but I also want to propose one concrete particular and developed solution through a systemic project. I want to analyse the economic and social implications of such a project as well as its technological requirements. This project will be critically analysed, and its probability of implementation will be discussed. This work is the result of the combination of my studies at Politecnico di Torino and my work as an engineer at SERFIM Recyclage. I am glad to see that these two aspects of my young career coexist so well and complement each other in many ways. I wish it can continue all the way through my career and lead me to contributing to the improvement of the waste management situation towards sustainability, in Lyon first, and then in a larger geographical area.
