Project Portfolio Management: A Case Study in Punch Torino

Project portfolio selection is a critical issue for many businesses. Tools for project portfolio selection and management are a widely acknowledged requirement in organizations' R&D, production, and marketing operations. The objective of this thesis is to provide an overview of the main methods present in literature to address the Project Portfolio Management, and their application to Punch Torino’s portfolio, to provide an approach that draws on the strengths of the analysed methodologies in order to find the best fit for the company’s needs and assist the management in making project portfolio selection decisions. A first section is dedicated to the Project Portfolio Management analysis, reviewing its main characteristics, the process that leads to the drafting of the portfolio and the professional figures involved, and finally going through the most popular approach to Project Portfolio selection. The second section is instead dedicated to the case study carried out in Punch Torino, in order to provide a comparison of the abovementioned project portfolio selection techniques applied to Punch Torino’s portfolio. It is briefly described the company’s resources allocation process and tool, the internal process for the definition of the portfolio, by means of both technical and financial evaluations, and ultimately the application of the selection techniques described in the first section.
