Rel. Francesco Paolo Deflorio. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Civile, 2019
Abstract: |
Transportation involves all activities in life. As a pedestrian, biker, passenger or driver everybody intends to develop its daily routines, becoming from that moment as a part of a transport system. However, the paradigm in the transportation field has been changing over the time. Since the invention of motor vehicles in the 18th century, in which urban planning was developed around them, until nowadays in which quality of life prevails encouraging innovative modes of transport. The search for new solutions in the city’s mobility is promoting the use of different modes of transport to reach the destination. Therefore, this entails encouraging people to walk, to use bicycles and to share the vehicles to travel. Likewise, leading to new transport business models such as bicycle/scooter sharing, carpooling, car sharing, etc. Besides, providing benefits in reduction of air pollution, noise exposure, car crashes, and congestion. Until recently, the multi-modal transport models only considered private vehicles and public transportation, regardless all stakeholders. Currently, models are working to include the flow of pedestrians and bicycles to upgrade the traffic signal cycles; What will allow to enhance the service for all parties. Furthermore, improvements in technology such as simulations and solving algorithms in a more efficient way make possible “real-time” optimization of the traffic prediction. |
